Comparison between Bitwarden on Android and iOS © Google Images

The existence of design discrepancies between the iOS and Android platforms prompted a re-imagination of what the largely popular password management app, Bitwarden could be in order to bridge the wider gap between both platforms. Being a user myself as the password manager of choice, this felt like a must‐do for peace of mind.

The major goal of this project was to redesign the Bitwarden app to provide a more user-friendly interface for users to manage their passwords and other sensitive data securely. The User interface and User Experience was to be brought as close as possible to a modern layout without disregard for platform standards nor making the current version feel alien.

Design

To begin the project, I conducted user research to better understand the needs and habits of Bitwarden's user-base through reviews on Google Play. I discovered that although many users appreciated the security features of the app, they found the interface to be a little outdated and in some cases cluttered. The image above shows some of the mixed reactions from Google Play showcasing both positive and negavite reviews. In additon, I conducted a competitive analysis of other password management apps in the market and established that many of them had a clean and intuitive interface that made it easy for users to manage their passwords and other sensitive information.

Based on the research, I embarked on designing a clean and intuitive interface that makes it easy for users to add and manage their passwords and other sensitive data. I re-organised the interface to make it more intuitive, and added features such as the ability to group passwords by category or folder. I also highlighted the password and pass-phrase generation feature that allow users to generate strong, secure passwords and phrases automatically, respectively.

Additionally, I improved the user experience of adding new passwords by simplifying the process and providing clear feedback when a new password is successfully added. To improve the overall user experience, I made the app more visually appealing by using a modern design language, making it more visually consistent across different platforms.

I redesigned the Bitwarden app to provide a clean and intuitive interface that makes it easy for users to manage their passwords and other sensitive data securely. The new features, such as the password generator and simplified password adding process, made Bitwarden more user-friendly and efficient. I believe that these changes will help Bitwarden maintain its position as one of the top password management apps in the market.
