New task at hand

We had an sitdown the minute we were handed new tasks and off we went digesting to finer bits how we could approach the brief.

Finding mould

Borough Market

Much as mould is everywhere all around us, we had to find a common place for us to meet and we agreed to set out for Borough Market at 8 Southwark St, London SE1 1TL

Personal encounters with mould

We discovered that mould was everywhere even in unexpected places all around our home environments. We found some on food like cheese, underneath the washing machine, walls and other places as long as the conditions were favourable for its growth.

Research

AEIOU

Our discoverings from Borough Market and our personal experiences documented in order to fill up the AEIOU which stands for:

Love letter

Dear mould, you are so beautiful to look at and this can be felt in how you display colour, form, texture and pattern on your colonies. This has inspired architectural, textural, art, mobility and other design disciplines.

Dear mould, you are so beautiful to look at and this can be felt in how you display colour, form, texture and pattern on your colonies. This has inspired architectural, textural, art, mobility and other design disciplines.

You are a crucial part of the life cycle with the fact that 30% of the soil is made up by you and you let organisms decompose which easily makes you the end and the beginning of everything life.

Your intelligence can be seen by how you colonise your subjects, almost like you have emotions.

You display incredible survival skills by literally being immortal. You adapt into new forms when conditions are no longer favourable for you to live.

You have been the reason for some of the tastiest foods ever made like cheese, soy sauce, some meats and drinks like kombucha which are good for our health in addition to quenching our thirst.

You can be used for medicine for example penicilin in turn helping millions live another day.

Some research has shown that when some children below the age of seven are exposed to certain kinds or mould, they tend to develop immune body systems to certain diseases.

And may be we would not have known that food, walls or some other things need attention or in some cases gone past their time.

Outcome

After back and forth discussions we settled on making a design from polythene and different colours of thread to represent the structure of mould that we later on presented.

Feedback

  • "Where is the mould?".
  • Not all mould has the structure we designed.
  • Not all mould is necessarily colourful.
